Inspired by veladoras in
Oaxacan churches.
A veladora is a small, faceted glass vessel that holds a votive (prayer) candle in Oaxacan churches. These are also used to serve shots of mezcal in. For Sombra Mezcal we used a veladora as a model to create the bottle shape, including the number of facets, and added a smoky tint to the glass to represent the smoky taste of the liquor. The palenque where Sombra is distilled uses many sustainable practices. One of which takes all the waste material from the agave and presses the fibers into adobe bricks for building low cost housing. We also used spent agave fibers to make the cork closures for the bottle.
